Abstract

Considering the ratio of the mean flow Reynolds number to the wave Reynolds number, it is shown that for the low frequency instability the mean flow inertia is small in comparison to that of the disturbance. The mean flow gradient thus being small is neglected to obtain a truncated Orr-Sommerfeld equation. The numerical solutions of this equation show instability at lower Reynolds numbers.
