Abstract

Proton spin lattice relaxation in powdered ammonium iodate has been measured at 10 MHz in the temperature range 100-425 K. The results are typical of a hindered solid with motions freezing around 77 K. A discontinuity in the $T_1$ vs T plot at $T_c$, characteristic of a first order phase transition, was observed suggesting that the ammonium ions are significantly affected at the phase transition. The activation energy is not much different in the two phases suggesting that the structures in the two phases are close to each other.
