Abstract

Segregation of Mn in Cu-Mn(5%) alloy is observed in the temperature range of 520 to 700 K. The activation enthalpy of segregation is found to be about 25 kJ/mole. Surface oxidation of Cu-Mn(5%) below and above the segregation temperature shows $Cu_2O$ formation on the surface. On vacuum annealing the oxidized alloy at 670 K, the displacement reaction $Cu_2O$+Mn \rightarrow 2Cu+ MnO occurs on the surface. The oxidation behaviour of Cu-Mn(25%) is similar to that of Cu-Mn(5%).
