Abstract

An overview is presented of the emerging area of optical storage of information, placing emphasis on alkali halide crystals as the prototype storage media. The twin phenomenon of photochromism and photodichroism exhibited by colour-centred alkali halides can be exploited for purposes of information storage. In such storage media picture information can be stored by direct as well as holographic methods and the Hurter-Driffield (H-D) characteristics can be established. It is shown that alkali halides are a useful material for fundamental research on optical storage of information.
