Abstract

The use of the $^{13}C$ satellites in the proton NMR spectra of systems providing deceptively simple spectra is suggested and demonstrated for the determination of molecular geometry using NMR spectroscopy of oriented systems. The $r_{\alpha}$, structure of phenyl isothiocyanate has thus been determined. The spectrum without the $^{13}C$ satellites does not provide sufficient independent dipolar couplings to determine the relative arrangements of protons and the order parameters.
