A review with 29 references. Metal oxides formed by the recurrent intergrowth of 2 structurally similar but compositionally different units are discussed. Preparation of complex metal oxides by the decomposition of precursors is presented. Interesting examples of metastable oxides prepared by topotactic reduction of parent oxides or topotactic dehydration of the parent hydroxides are described
