Abstract

H-bonding in the excited n-$\pi^*$ and $\pi-\pi^*$ states of pyridine and pyrazine is examined by calculating the electric field at different points in space from the CNDO charges. The H bond which is formed in the ground state is broken upon excitation to the n-$\pi^*$ state in pyridine; weak H-bonding is possible in the n-$\pi^*$ state of pyrazine.
