Abstract

The precession method of x-ray diffraction has been applied to the study of the B form of lithium DNA. The advantages of using the precession method generally for fibers are pointed out. The results show that the diffraction data are incompatible with a uniform helical structure. Addnl., accurate measurements of the structural parameters reveal variations in the values of these parameters, dictated by salt content and relative humidity. These are indicative of the large flexibility inherent in the DNA structure giving rise to a polymorphism within the B-form.
