Abstract

The mixed-alkali effect in $MoO_3-(R'_2O + R"_2O)-P_2O_5$ phosphomolybdate glasses was investigated using ultrasonic velocity measurements. The d., sound velocity, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Debye temperature show pronounced mixed-alkali effects in glasses containing $Na_2O + K_2O$ and those containing $Li_2O + K_2O$. The results are discussed in terms of a previous structural model for these glasses based on experimental data including the elastic properties of glasses containing a single alkali. The mixed-alkali effect is explained in terms of the reformation of at. rings which, it is suggested, takes place during the modification by alkali oxides.
