Abstract

Variable temperature operations, common in aerospace, nuclear, electronic and other critical fields of modern engineering, make it imperative to study thermoelastic effects in fastener joints. This paper presents a part of the major study in this field carried out at Indian Institute of Science. To extract the basic understanding, a two-dimensional model consisting of a rigid smooth pin in a large plate is considered as an abstraction. At partial pin-plate interfacial contact, step model for thermal conductance has been conveniently used. The authors explore the possibility and successfully establish the virtually direct application of the already achieved solutions for mechanical loading to cases of combined thermomechanical loading. This is achieved by establishing a set of new generalised parameters by appropriately combining the mechanical and thermal variables of the problem.
