Abstract

When a stationary Cu pin slides against a moving steel disk, initially an Fe rich layer builds up on the Cu surface. This layer protects the Cu and gives a low wear rate. As heat accumulates to a crit. level, small pockets of near-surface regions undergo extensive flow, possibly due to plastic instability. Mobility of the subsurface region dislodges the layer and causes a high rate of wear for the Cu pin.
