Abstract

In order to investigate the effect of substituents on the stability and physicochemical properties of the chromate (V) phase, chromium in lanthanum chromate (V) has been partially substituted by $Ti^4^+$, $Cu^2^+$ and $Mg^2^+$ ions. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the material $La(Cr_1_-_x_M_x) O_4_-_8$ where M=Cu or Ti can exist as a single phase in the compositional range of $x\leq0.4$. Substitution affects the morphology of the material to a considerable extent apart from the thermal stability of the $LaCrO_4$ phase. The substituents also modify the physicochemical and spectral characteristics of $LaCr0_4$ (V). It has not been possible to incorporate magnesium to any appreciable extent in the $LaCrO_4$, (V) phase.
