Abstract

Oscillatory nature of stresses and interpenetration of crack faces of bimaterial interface crack has been observed due to the presence of complex singularity in the stresses at the crack tip. Strain energy release rate components $G_I$ and $G_{II}$ estimated from finite element analysis do not converge and oscillate with decreasing virtual crack extension. Limited amount of literature observed that the contact zone disappears in the presence of material non-linearity. This paper primarily addresses this issue. The interpenetration of crack is observed in FE model and prevented using gap elements. When subjected to a remote tension perpendicular to the crack it is observed that there is a contact zone initially at small load levels. When the load level is increased the contact zone progressively decreases and finally disappears at certain load level. The mixed mode nature is seen even after the crack tip opens up, whereas they are primarily mode II dominant when contact zone is maintained in the initial part of loading. The modular ratio of the two materials is progressively decreased from $E_2/E_1=10^5$ to 10 to examine the limiting behavior
